North Regional Skeet - INCLUDING SKEET INTERNATIONAL Update by Christine Lancaster

English Open Skeet Championship held at Doveridge in June 2006.

Many congratulations go to Robert Jones on winning the English Skeet Veterans title for the second year running with a 100 straight.

Gary Cooke and Steve Leppington also both shooting 100 but unfortunately both dropped targets in the shoot off for the title.

Well Done to Sam McGonigal for shooting a very respectable 97. Also shooting well were Andrew Parsons 99, James Perry 98, David Barrett and Derek Wilson 97, Mick Cook 96, Roger Beaumont, Barry Harsine and Sue Tyas 95.

England Team Selection Shoot held at Bisley in May and Northampton in July 2006.

Many congratulations go to James Perry for gaining his first England cap this year, shooting a perfect score on the second day at Northampton and to Robert Jones for making the Veterans team for the third year running.

A special congratulations to Sam McGonigal for making his début at the England Selection shoot and shooting so well. His efforts gained him a Reserve place in the juniors. Very well done Sam – I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of you in the magazine.

Steve Leppington (Seniors) and Chris Lancaster (Ladies) also made it through to the reserves, both narrowly missing out in the shoot-off's.

Three Counties Shoot held at Oxton in July 2006 (Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire)

Gary Cooke won the Three Counties Shoot on 99 after winning the shoot off against Steve Leppington. Again many congratulations Gary.

British Open Skeet Championship at Southern Counties in August 2006

A very well done to Gary Cooke for winning the British Open Skeet Championship at Southern Counties. Gary shooting on Saturday shot a tenacious ton and had to find a bed on Saturday evening so as to be available for the shoot off. The arduous trip proved worthy of the effort as Gary won the title outright in the shoot off against Joe Kitson, Neil Faulkner and Jim Goddard shooting the only straight in the shoot off for the main Championship. Good to see Gary back on form.

A very well done to Sam McGonigal who won the Colts title on 99, also second in his class, Tim Webster who came second on 98 and Robert Jones shooting a 98 took third in the Veterans.

The Juniors, Sam McGonigal (99), Tim Webster (98) and Peter Denton (92) won the Junior Team event. Well done guys! The veterans of Robert Jones (98) E Bell (95) and Skeet Team Manager, Ken Whelan (93) second in the team event. The seniors managed a respectable third. Unfortunately there was no Ladies Team entry this year.

A big thank you should also go to David Barratt of who again sponsored the Northern Region Team. Without his support the Team would not have such smart polo shirts, caps and badges. So once again, thank you David for your continued support.

Well done to everyone who made the effort to travel down to Southern Counties.

Yorkshire Skeet Championship – June 2006

The first Yorkshire Skeet Championship (this is due to the amalgamation of the regions) was held at the North of England Clay Target Centre at Rufforth. James Perry triumphed after a five way shoot off. Well Done James.

Also many thanks to David Barratt who has very generously sponsored the Trophy for this Championship Shoot.

Home International Skeet Championship

The Home International Skeet Championship was held at Auchterhouse in Scotland on Saturday 24 August. Robert Jones (Veterans) and James (Billy) Perry (Seniors) from the Northern Region had qualified to represent England in the respective categories.

Robert Jones reigned victorious showing that he was the man of the day taking not only the Veterans title with team mate Johnnie Walker, but also Veterans High Gun, England Veterans High Gun and more importantly International High Gun, which proved to be a popular win, not only with the English. Robert put in a perfect score of 100 at a ground which is classed as testing and was one of only two hundred straights to be achieved on the day. The other 100 was put in by Rhys Evans, a Welsh Junior who dropped a couple of clays in the shoot off with Robert, who is proving hard to beat in a shoot off situation. Robert brought back to the Northern Region a total four pieces of silverware. Many, many congratulations Robert. Perhaps the first shooter in the Northern Region to win a Skeet International for a long time.

James Perry who earnt his first England cap this season also shot extremely well with a very creditable 97. This score gave James the accolade of becoming joint high gun for a new Cap. Very well done James who admitted that shooting an international competition was "just something else!"
